RV Roof Maintenance Tips — Your Complete Resource Guide

Whether you’ve got a brand-new TPO roof or a 15-year-old EPDM membrane that’s seen better days, these maintenance tips from our certified applicator network will help you get the most out of your RV’s most important system. Updated monthly based on member questions and field feedback.

Maintenance by Season

🌸 Spring (Pre-Season)

  • Full surface inspection: Get on the roof and walk every inch. Look for cracking, chalking, or lifting at any sealant line. Use our complete leak detection guide as your inspection checklist.
  • Perimeter seam check: Run a finger along every edge seam where the roof membrane meets the fascia. Any lifting or gap — even a hairline crack — needs immediate attention.
  • Penetration audit: Every vent, AC base, antenna mount, and solar panel bracket is a potential entry point. Poke gently at the sealant bead. If it’s brittle or cracks easily, it needs reapplication.
  • Drain channel clearing: Remove all debris from drain paths. A blocked drain during spring rain can pond water for days, accelerating membrane degradation.

☀️ Summer

  • UV inspection: After the first major heat event, inspect the roof for any new cracking in EPDM or TPO surfaces. High temperatures cause rapid differential expansion that can open pre-existing micro-cracks.
  • Monthly visual check: During heavy travel season, do a quick monthly walk-around and look inside for any water stains on ceiling panels or upper cabinets — early signs of intrusion.
  • Vent cover replacement: Summer UV is the primary cause of plastic vent cover cracking. Replace any cracked covers before their season-long absence leads to an undetected leak.

See our complete summer maintenance checklist article for the full version.

🍂 Fall (Pre-Storage)

  • Post-season deep clean: Remove all biological growth (mold, algae, lichen) with an appropriate RV roof cleaner before storage. Biological material continues to degrade your membrane during winter storage.
  • Sealant re-application: Any sealant that showed wear in your spring or summer inspections should be refreshed before storage — not left to fail further over winter.
  • Cover consideration: If storing outdoors in a northern climate, consider an RV cover that allows some airflow to prevent condensation accumulation under the cover.

❄️ Winter

  • Snow/ice removal: Remove heavy snow accumulation promptly — not for waterproofing reasons, but to prevent structural loading damage. Never use a metal scraper on any membrane roof.
  • Freeze-thaw monitoring: After each significant freeze-thaw cycle, do a quick visual check of any sealant areas you were monitoring. Freeze-thaw accelerates any existing micro-crack expansion dramatically.

Material-Specific Tips

EPDM Rubber Roofs

  • Never use petroleum-based cleaners — they dissolve the EPDM compound
  • Use only EPDM-compatible self-leveling sealant (avoid silicone — it won’t bond)
  • Apply a UV-protective coating annually if you’re in a high-sun climate
  • Inspect for chalk (white residue when you wipe the surface) — heavy chalking indicates UV degradation and signals it’s time to consider a full protective coating

TPO Roofs

  • Inspect every welded seam at least twice yearly — seam separation is TPO’s primary failure mode
  • TPO is heat-weldable, so localized seam repairs are possible by a skilled technician
  • Clean with mild soap and water; avoid harsh degreasers that strip the UV stabilizers from the surface

Fiberglass Roofs

  • Inspect all slideout transition points — this is where fiberglass roofs crack first
  • Apply a marine-grade fiberglass wax or sealant annually to maintain UV protection
  • Small stress cracks can be filled with fiberglass repair compound; larger cracks need professional evaluation
