About Polyurea Coatings

What is polyurea and how is it different from other RV roof coatings?

Polyurea is an elastomeric polymer formed by a rapid two-component chemical reaction. Unlike liquid rubber coatings that sit on top of the substrate, properly applied polyurea forms a chemical bond with the primed roof surface, creating elongation of 300–500% and tensile strength of 3,000–4,500 PSI. This makes it dramatically more resistant to cracking, peeling, and delamination than conventional coatings. Read the full technical explanation in our polyurea chemistry deep dive.

How long does a polyurea coating last?

When professionally applied on a properly prepared surface, polyurea coatings from our certified network carry lifetime warranties from the product manufacturer. Commercial applications (industrial facilities, parking structures, truck beds) have documented performance histories of 20+ years. Our verified member reviews include reports from owners who are 5–7 years post-application with zero issues.

Can polyurea be applied over my existing rubber roof?

Yes, in most cases. Polyurea can be applied directly over EPDM rubber, TPO, fiberglass, and aluminum substrates after proper cleaning and priming. The existing membrane typically does not need to be removed unless it is severely delaminated. See our roof preparation guide for the specific prep requirements by substrate type.

How does polyurea compare to EPDM, TPO, and fiberglass?

Each material has different strengths and weaknesses. EPDM is the most common and most affordable but requires the most ongoing maintenance. TPO offers better UV reflectivity but is prone to seam failures. Fiberglass is durable but cracks at flex points. Polyurea outperforms all three in flexibility, impact resistance, and longevity — and it can be applied over any of them. Full comparison: EPDM vs. TPO vs. Fiberglass vs. Polyurea.

Cost and Pricing

How much does a polyurea RV roof coating cost?

Typical costs range from $1,800–$4,500 depending on RV size (Class A, B, C, fifth wheel, travel trailer), roof condition, surface prep requirements, and geographic location. This compares favorably to full rubber roof replacement at $4,500–$12,000+. Request a free quote to get pricing specific to your RV.

Is financing available?

Financing options vary by certified applicator. When you connect with an applicator through our directory, ask about payment plans during your initial consultation. Many applicators work with RV-specialty financing partners.

Finding and Working With Applicators

How do I find a certified applicator near me?

Use our applicator finder. Every listed professional has completed our certification program and passed our quality verification process. You can also request a quote online and we’ll match you with the nearest qualified professional.

What questions should I ask an applicator before booking?

Key questions: What primer system do you use on my specific substrate type? What is the elongation and tensile rating of your polyurea product? Do you include UV topcoat as part of the system? How do you document the job for warranty purposes? Can I see photos of comparable past work? Our article on understanding inspection reports also prepares you for the pre-job assessment conversation.

What does the coating process involve?

A full professional application typically involves: roof inspection and condition documentation, surface cleaning and degreasing, spot repairs to any damaged substrate areas, application of bonding primer appropriate to the substrate, application of polyurea base coat, application of UV-stable topcoat, inspection and final documentation. The prep work takes most of the day; actual spraying takes 30–90 minutes. Full walkthrough: How Polyurea Works.

Community and Membership

How do I join the RV Roof Protection community?

Membership is free. Visit our RV Network page for details and use our contact form to register. You’ll get access to our member forum, monthly virtual meetings, the regional meetup calendar, and member discounts from certified applicators.

How often does the community meet?
